Day 30: Hiking My Camino de Santiago

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

August 18, 2018

Today on Day 30 of my walk on the Camino de Santiago I walked 22.28 miles from Casanova to Salceda.

It was uneventful other than I definitely learned that I need to re-tape my shoes every two days. And I think I did better taping job tonight.

Angela developed some significant blisters yesterday so she took a taxi to Salceda. Astrid, Julia, Denise, Luca, and Andrea left at 5:00 AM. I started walking around 6:40. I saw Luca and Andrea briefly before Salceda. By the way, Luca and Andrea are Italians who started their Camino at Astorga. They met Julia and Astrid in Sarria and have been part of the Fellowship since.

I ran into Julia, Astrid, and Denise later at a cafe where this photo was taken. We walked the rest of the way to Salceda together.

Tomorrow, Astrid, Julia, Denise, Philipp, Luca, Andrea, and I will begin walking at 5:00 AM. Angela will get a taxi and meet us at our destination.

Julia gave me this photo she took at the Cafe where we connected today. The puppy belonged to a pilgrim there. I talked with him and he shared that he started walking 11 years ago from the Czech Republic. I guess he has been to Jerusalem and many other places. He started walking alone but rescued a mule along his journey. This puppy and another dog are also rescue dogs. The puppy, dog, and mule now travel with him. His first name is Peter and evidently he is known as Peter Pan on the trail. He shared that he is writing a book that will be available on Amazon in November. Its title will be "Camino Delveda" and will show an author name of Peter Pan. I will probably try to get it. (Note: I never could find the book.)

Brief descriptions of the photos:

  1. This is another pilgrim statue in the village of O Coto.

  2. This is a church in the village of Leboreiro before sunrise.

  3. This is a walking bridge I crossed outside of the village of Leboreiro.

  4. This is part of the trail I walked.

  5. This is an ancient bridge entering the village of Furelos.

  6. This is an scallop shell/arrow marker in the village of Furelos.

  7. This is a church in the city of Melide.

  8. This is part of the trail I walked. The pilgrims you see facing me are actually walking backwards. Their feet hurt so much that by walking backwards down this small hill took pressure off the blisters or sore parts of their feet. I have done this before.

  9. This is part of the trail I walked.

  10. This is a view from the trail of the countryside through which I was walking.

  11. This is a bridge in the village of Ribadiso da Baixo.

  17. This is a pilgrim I met outside a cafe where Julia, Astrid, Denise and I met for a break. I talked with him and he shared that he started walking 11 years ago from the Czech Republic. I guess he has been to Jerusalem and many other places. He started walking alone but rescued a mule along his journey. The dog and mule in this photo and the puppy in the next image are animals he rescued along the way. The puppy, dog, and mule now travel with him. His first name is Peter and evidently he is known as Peter Pan on the trail. He shared that his book will be available on Amazon in November. Its title will be “Camino Delveda” and will show an author name of Peter Pan.

  18. This is the puppy I mentioned in the previous photo. The puppy belongs to a pilgrim who started walking 11 years ago from the Czech Republic.
